Starting orthodontic treatment with ClearCorrect is a faster, more discreet, and more comfortable way to get a healthy, beautifully aligned smile. But even though most patients agree that these convenient trays look and feel better than traditional braces, it is not uncommon to experience a little bit of sensitivity or discomfort when your treatment begins. If you’re struggling with temporary tenderness with your new aligners or simply wondering “does ClearCorrect hurt?” here are six tried and tested tips to help ease this sensitivity and get your gorgeous new grin underway!

Cold Compresses

Holding an ice pack or cold compress to your cheek over the area of your mouth that is feeling temporary pressure from your clear aligner is a fast, easy way to numb the pain and reduce any swelling.  Just be sure to wrap ice cubes in a cloth if you’re using them so your skin doesn’t get injured.

OTC Pain Relievers

Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen are usually enough to tackle the discomfort of new aligners. In most cases, patients notice this sensitivity usually goes away on its own after the first day or two of wear, so you shouldn’t need to take medication for long, either.

Orthodontic Wax

Orthodontic wax is a staple for traditional wire and bracket braces, but just because there’s no metal poking your cheek with ClearCorrect doesn’t mean you can’t still utilize this helpful product. It can be used to cushion the edges of aligners that may be rubbing the soft tissues or gums, creating a barrier. For a more permanent solution to this problem, call your dentist, as he may be able to trim the edge of your tray, so it fits more comfortably. However, do not attempt to do this yourself, as you can easily destroy the aligner if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Soft Foods

Even though you shouldn’t be eating while wearing your aligners, if your teeth are still sore or sensitive at mealtimes, stick to a soft diet until your mouth adjusts. Options like mashed potatoes, yogurt, scrambled eggs, smoothies, oatmeal, and soups are easy on the teeth and still provide plenty of nutrition to help power you through the day.

Gradual Wear Time Increase

It is important that you follow your dentist’s treatment plan and wear your new aligners at least 22 hours a day. Otherwise, your teeth may not move as quickly as intended. However, as you are first getting used to wearing your ClearCorrect trays, it may help to start off small and gradually increase your wear time to build up to that 22 hour a day goal. Talk to your dentist about how to space this out, but keep in mind that the sooner you start wearing your trays as directed, the faster you’ll see results, and the easier it will get to adjust to your next set of aligners!

Proper Wear & Care

Treating and wearing your aligners appropriately can help make them feel better, too. Be sure to remove them to eat and drink anything besides water and clean them well at least once a day so they don’t become discolored, foul smelling, or stop fitting properly. Your own oral hygiene is incredibly important with ClearCorrect, too, because saliva cannot rinse food and bacteria from your teeth while your trays are on. Thus, don’t forget to brush and floss them well before putting your aligners back on after eating so you don’t increase your risk of painful cavities and gum disease!

Remember, ClearCorrect aligners are a more discreet, comfortable way to get a straight, beautiful smile, but it may still cause some sensitivity at first. To alleviate discomfort and prevent future oral health problems, try the tips above for a smooth transition. If you still have any issues, questions, or concerns, reach out to your dentist for help.
