First Visit With a Dentist In Arlington? Find Out What To Expect

Woman with a beautiful smile

If your first visit with us is coming up, you may be wondering what it will be like. As a dentist in Arlington, we want to set the stage for many years of great dental care by starting with a complete exam at your first visit. Our entire team is committed to providing high-quality care from the very start, so we structure your first appointment so we can get to know you and recommend the best treatment for your needs. If you’d like to know more about what your first visit will entail, keep reading below!

What Does Your First Visit Include?

Primarily, your first visit is designed for a comprehensive exam from Dr. Gray. Once he’s evaluated your dental health, he can determine the most appropriate type of cleaning for your needs, which will be done at a second visit.

Since your overall health is connected to your mouth, we’ll start by looking at your health history. We’ll also spend time getting to know you to find out what’s most important to you when it comes to your smile. Then we’ll include all of the following steps to gather information about your oral health:

  • X-rays and photographs – To give you an accurate picture of your oral health, we use X-rays help us see what we can’t see with the naked eye, including cavities underneath dental crowns and in-between the back teeth as well as your jaws and temporomandibular joints (TMJ). We’ll also take up-close photographs of your teeth to show you what we see.
  • Oral cancer screening – All of your checkups, including your first visit, include a simple, non-invasive oral cancer screening that takes just minutes.
  • Gum exam – We’ll examine your gums to see if you have any signs of periodontal (gum) disease. This common condition is the #1 cause of tooth loss and also increases your risk of many health conditions such as heart disease and Alzheimer’s. If we see any gum problems, we’ll recommend a special type of cleaning that will better serve your needs.
  • Dental exam – Dr. Gray will then check that your existing dental work is functioning well and determine if there are any cavities, fractures, or other issues that need to be addressed.

The Importance of Personal Attention

By taking the time to understand your needs, we can make sure you’re getting the care that’s best for you. Any treatment we recommend will be based on your individual circumstances, including your dental and medical history, goals, lifestyle, age, and budget. We’ll also give you multiple options whenever possible to make your treatment planning a collaborative process.

Being thorough at your first visit helps us provide the outstanding dental care you deserve. We believe this extra time is well worth it and benefits your oral health now and in the future!
